My First Award!
I recently received my first blogging award – a Liebster. A what? To receive one you have to be awesome and able to create literary masterpieces whilst shooting sparkly moonbeams out of your ass. Actually, as much as I could possibly achieve the above maybe on a good day and after a Berocca in a Red Bull, the reality is, all you need to be able to do is appeal to another fellow blogger and get nominated! The word Liebster in German means : sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, cute, endearing, valued – and the award is a heartwarming way of sharing the love between bloggers and to help promote the newbies of the bloggersphere. So I shan’t be wearing a gold medallion for 3 months like my 7 year old last year after her proud 5k run, and I won’t be smashing a bottle of champagne on the side of a big boat (bad timing loaning it to the Hoff for his med cruise) but I shall be saying a Big Thank You to my fellow blogger friend Mel from www.melbtravel.com for this wonderful nomination – it puffed my chest and I’ve walked two inches higher since I heard. To accept the award, however, I must answer several questions that Mel herself has formulated in an attempt to share a bit about myself with the rest of the world. Here goes…
Favourite country and why?
Well this ones easy and my hubby hates this answer because I didn’t travel here with him but I know 100% that if he’d been it would be his favourite too: Costa Rica. The size of Wales but brimming with diversity and flora and fauna. I spent a month here back in 2005 and I fell in love with the people, the waterfalls, the beaches, the wildlife, the culture, the coffee and a gazillion other things. But most of all it was the animals – we had sloths in our gardens, lizards everywhere, butterflies the size of your face with iridescent wings, folk travelled on horseback, poisonous dart frogs, jumping spiders, creatures I don’t even know the names of, beach floors littered with hermit crabs and the monkeys, oh those pesky monkeys. It was wonderful and my heart aches to go back one day.
What 3 essential things do you always travel with?
1. My camera. I don’t want to miss a thing and I really got into photography 6 years ago so I regularly shout “stop the car!” for a photo opportunity.
2. Tea bags – what can I say, us Brits like our tea!
3. A nice dress, then we have to find a good reason to wear it!
What is your favourite thing to use to capture your travel memories?
My blog! I jot down notes in my little leather yellow notebook as we’re travelling round, the way things make me feel or smells and sounds, that way I can remember places better when it comes to writing the post.
How many countries have you been to?
19. Only 177 to go.
Where is your next travel adventure?
We’re off to Copenhagen in a few days time. We booked an impromptu flight for just the two of us back in February this year and we loved it, so we’re going back with the kids and the parents. Might pop over into Sweden on that awesome bridge while we’re at it.
Where is your dream destination?
Apart from Costa Rica with Rich, I’d love to venture East for a change. India first off. I’ve heard your senses are assaulted in every which way, and that I would like to experience. My best friend spent a bit of time there on her round the world trip and she stirred in me a desire to go. One day.
Budget or Luxury?
Luxury all the way. I’ve done my days of hostels and camping, shared bathrooms with foreigners which resemble repositories for all of Europe’s spare pubic hair, and slept in fields where the ground is so uneven you wake up needing a Osteopath. Give me a chocolate on my pillow any day. That’s not to say we stay 5* everywhere we go, if it’s a choice between one expensive holiday or 3 cheap/mid range holidays, we’re always going to choose quantity over quality. That said, we have become experts at finding great places at low prices.
Adventure or relaxation?
Adventure does relax us! Exploring the unknown, finding the secret spots, sampling a bit of local living is what makes us happy. I love to read, so laying on a beach with my head in a book is high on my list of favourite things to do but it’s a little distracting when you know there are millions of different opportunities just waiting to happen in the nearby town or National Park or coastline. I can read for an hour but then I want to explore.
Favourite travel app?
The London Underground has a tube app and it randomly goes off even when I’m not in London, informing me of line closures and delays, but I love it because I can be in Asda doing the weekly shop and my handbag shouts ‘mind the gap’ and sings the appropriate ‘Bing-bongs’ to alert me of some tube-news. There I am, happily dreaming about one of my favourite cities in the sausage aisle! The skyscanner app has enabled us to book flights over a beer with friends on days that we never woke up thinking we’d be booking a holiday that day. And who couldn’t get by without trip advisor!? I also like the Geochaching app (it’s taken us to some pretty random places on our travels) and GuidiGO for walking tours.
Favourite travel quote?
Hmm, yeah – I’m not one for quotes. Sorry!
